Melissa Nelson is the Director of Global Marketing and Communications at the Platt Retail Institute. She manages the firm’s strategic marketing and communications programs, social media presence, and publications. Prior to being promoted to this position in December 2019, Nelson served for more than five years as the Vice President, Corporate Communications.
Before joining the Platt Retail Institute, Nelson served as Director of Marketing Communications at Historic Charleston Foundation in Charleston, SC. She was responsible for creating and implementing a plan of strategic external communications to provide a consistent and cohesive message as well as managing community outreach, public relations and education initiatives. Under Nelson’s leadership, the Foundation raised nearly $1 million during its annual fundraiser.
Prior to joining the Historic Charleston Foundation team, Nelson was the Media Production and Outreach Manager at Blackbaud where she managed everything from video production and editing to advertising, public relations, and writing. Before moving to Charleston, SC, Nelson was a Media Relations Specialist at United States Postal Service Headquarters in Washington, DC. Preceding her six years at the Postal Service, she worked at an ABC broadcast affiliate in various roles including the assignment desk.
With more than 15 years working in the communications field, Nelson has experience in the government, public, and nonprofit sectors. She holds an undergraduate degree with a dual focus in Corporate Communications and Broadcast Communications from Elon University as well as a graduate degree in Strategic Communications and Leadership from Seton Hall University.
